The Super Pink Moon of April 26th is the first supermoon of the year and an excellent opportunity to try a full moon meditation. A full moon can symbolize a time of fulfillment, an opportunity to reflect on what you have achieved, or the end of a project or a period of time. A full moon brings new energy you can harness with a focused meditation.

What is a Supermoon?

The moon’s orbit around the earth is not a perfect circle. There is one point each month when the moon is closest to the earth (known as perigee) and once when it is farthest (known as apogee.)

During a supermoon, the perigee aligns with a full moon. This makes the full moon appearabout 15% brighter and 7% bigger than normal. In 2021, there will be two supermoons. The first is April’s pink moon, making it a special time to try a full moon meditation.

April’s Full Moon

Many cultures call April’s full moon a “pink moon”, but don’t be disappointed if it’s not really pink. The color the moon appears depends on your location and on particles in the atmosphere.

This pink supermoon gets its name in North America because it aligns with the blooming of creeping phlox, a pretty pink wildflower. Of course, this is just one of the many names given for this moon. Other Native American names include:

  • Breaking ice moon
  • Moon of the red grass
  • Budding moon
  • Frog moon
  • Moon when ducks return
  • Moon when geese lay eggs

Full moon names describe natural phenomena that coincide with the time of year they appear. People use full moons to describe nature’s changing seasons and cycles.

Meditating on the Super Pink Moon

A full moon meditation focuses on increased energy, fulfillment, and the culmination of goals, projects, and intentions. Some people believe there arecertain benefits of meditating on the full moon, including purification, a more intense spiritual experience, an increased manifestation of intentions, and a revitalization of the mind and body.
